The latest data for 2019 ranks every area of the country for the health & safety risk faced by businesses.
Business risk is a different slant on health & safety.
But it matters because, in 2016, the Government changed the sentencing guidelines for prosecuting health & safety breaches. As a result, businesses, business owners, directors and employees are receiving a more fines of a higher cost. Figures of £1m+ are common for bigger firms.
At the same time, prosecutions are becoming more frequent. And employees and directors are receiving a higher rate of jail terms for longer periods of time.

So in response we launched our Health & Safety Business Risk Rank, which draws on official Health and Safety Executive and Office for National Statistics data to show the risk faced by businesses from health & safety breaches in every single area of the UK.
The data has been updated for 2019 and analyses 380 areas. It scores and ranks each area and summarises the distinct variances in the risk businesses face, depending purely on where they are based.
Some headlines from the 2019 data:
- Bridgend in Wales is riskiest with a score of 97.
- St Albans in Hertfordshire is least risky with a score of 11
- Wales has nine of the top ten areas
- There’s also an obvious north/south divide, with the riskiest places all north of the Watford Gap
- In Leeds, the chances of suffering a serious injury were 3% higher than the year before, but down 6% in Hull, 4% in York and 9% in Sheffield
- In the North West, accidents increased by 2% year-on-year across the region, while fatalities increased by 25% over the same period
